At its June 2, 2021, meeting, the San Bruno Community Foundation Board of Directors honored the 2021 recipients of the Crestmoor Neighborbood Memorial Scholarship. Founded in 2016, the Crestmoor Scholarship provides multi-year college scholarship awards to outstanding San Bruno high school and community college students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the San Bruno community. Receiving scholarships totaling $195,000, the 2021 Crestmoor Scholars include (pictured below, left to right, top row to bottom) Alejandra Aguirre (who is headed to San Jose State University), Alyssa Gacos (San Francisco State University), Christopher Wardell (Western Governors University), Isabella Ramirez (San Francisco State University), Anthony Yu (UC Berkeley), Rania Mili (Menlo College), Kassidy Anne Patron (UCLA), Estefany Vega (California State University, East Bay), Khaoula Aissaoui (Stanford University), Mia Ledesma (San Francisco State University), Jocelynn Franco (UCLA), Michael Eiserle (Woodland Community College), and Carlos Gonzalez (UC Merced).
SBCF is funding the 2021 Crestmoor Scholarship with generous donations from the Joseph W Welch Jr Foundation, the San Mateo County Association of REALTORS® Foundation, and Allan and Mary Lou Johnson, in addition to investment proceeds from a portion of the restitution funds resulting from the City of San Bruno's settlement with Pacific Gas & Electric Company following the 2010 gas pipeline explosion that devastated San Bruno's Crestmoor neighborhood. The Crestmoor Scholarship honors the community members who most directly endured the destruction of the explosion and resulting fire, especially the eight San Bruno residents who lost their lives, and ensures that the 2010 tragedy is not forgotten.
At the Board meeting, which was held via Zoom, President Emily Roberts introduced the Crestmoor Scholars and lauded their accomplishments. San Bruno Mayor Rico Medina congratulated the Crestmoor Scholars, as did Randy Torrijos of Supervisor Dave Pine's office, which is providing San Mateo County Commendations to all the Scholars. 2017 Crestmoor Scholar Harmonie Ahuna, who is graduating from UCLA, provided the 2021 Scholars with inspiration and advice as they move forward in their college careers.
