In September 2020, the SAMCAR Foundation donated funds in the amount of $7,349 to the San Bruno Community Foundation for the Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship. The story of why that exact dollar amount was donated, how it was raised and how it made its way to the recipient organization has been a decade in the making.
Following the 2010 gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno, SAMCAR member Anne Oliva organized a fundraiser at Big Mouth Burger to do something for the kids in the neighborhood affected by the explosion. In addition to donated supplies and much needed community gathering, the fundraiser brought in exactly $7,349 in monetary donations.
The San Bruno explosion made national and international news when it happened and still continues to be in the news from today. During the years immediately following the devastating event, San Bruno was forming the San Bruno Community Foundation, which established the Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship to honor the community members who most directly endured the destruction of the explosion and fire. The funds in the memorial scholarship are invested in San Bruno's young people.
The Scholarship Program ensures that the tragedy of September 9, 2010 is not forgotten and that the resiliency, teamwork, leadership, and commitment to community displayed through San Bruno in the aftermath of the explosion and fire are honored in the annual recipients of the Scholarship.
Now, the time was right for the SAMCAR Foundation to donate the funds where they will be used for the San Bruno students who have been actively engaged in the community.
Special thanks to Anne Oliva, Jim Ruane, former Mayor of San Bruno, Leslie Hatamiya, Executive Director SBCF, Suzan Wallace, former chair of the SAMCAR Foundation Council, and SAMCAR for being stewards of the funds until the SAMCAR Foundation could make this worthy contribution to support the San Bruno community.
